Obituary | Paul Weflen, 94, died June 16th, 2021, in Mulberry. He was quintessential "greatest generation". He was born on August 31, 1926, to Peder and Anna (Eliason) Weflen in Wang Township, Renville County, Minnesota, the youngest of nine. He grew up on a farm in western Minnesota during the depression. As soon as he graduated from Granite Falls High School, he enlisted in the Navy and, along with three of his brothers, served during World War II. He returned home, married Maxine Whitlock, a "swell kid" from Indiana that he had met in Seattle. Paul learned a trade on the GI Bill becoming a master craftsman (carpentry). They moved to Indiana, and he started his upholstery business which he operated for more than 50 years. Paul was devoted to Mulberry and served in the volunteer fire department, the town council, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church Council, community club, telephone co-op board of directors, Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #618 where he served as Master in 1965. He volunteered at the Mulberry Health Nursing Home until "retiring" a few months ago. Paul was smart and funny with a quick and dry sense of humor. He liked gardening and camping and was a voracious reader. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, daughter-in-law, Brenda, and his beloved wife, Maxine, to whom he was married nearly 61 years. He is survived by 4 children: Pete, Karen (Mike), Ellen (Gary), and Steve (Karen). As well as 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A special thanks to all the staff at Mulberry Health for their loving care. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2021, from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at Genda Funeral Home in Mulberry. The funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, June 20th, 2021, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 610 W Jackson St, Mulberry, IN 46058. Burial will follow in Wyandotte Cemetery in Dayton, IN. Memorials in Paul's name may be made to the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 610 W Jackson St, Mulberry, IN 46058, or the Stone Soup Food Pantry, 114 N Main St, Mulberry, IN 46058.
