Robert J. (Red) Delaney was born to James C. Delaney and Mary (Franzen) Delaney on Feb. 23, 1930, at Exeter, and passed away on Feb. 3, 2002, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 71 years, 11 months, and 10 days. He was one of four children in the family. He was married to Lorna I. Cummings of Denver Colo. on Sept. 2, 1965.
Red, as he was known by family and friends, joined the military after graduating from Fairmont High School and served in the Navy and Marines, serving in the Korean War. After moving to Fairmont with his family in 1972, Red worked in law enforcement in Fairmont with the city police department and later served as Fillmore County Sheriff.
He was blessed with a quick wit, fierce determination and was capable of asserting himself when the situation required it. He was known to have a solid pool game, enjoy the company of good friends, and tell a good story.
His father, James Delaney, mother Mary Gangstad, and step-father, Pete Gangstad, preceded Red in death.
Those surviving are his wife, Lorna; daughter Mary Kahler and husband Danny; son Dusty Malmgren and wife Suzanne; daughter, Michelle Bice and husband Mike; sisters Bonita Cardenas; and Janice Frolich; and brother Jerry Gangstad; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6th at the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva. Interment with military honors by Lt. Forbes American Legion Post No. 21 of Fairmont was held at the Exeter Cemetery.
